About Eric Millikin

Artist Statement

21% of Americans believe in witches. 33% of Americans believe alien spacecraft have visited Earth. Myself? I believe that witches and UFOs are actually the same thing, but I’m not sure if I still believe in my fellow Americans. My experimental research explores the intersections of advanced technology, American society, dark humor, occult practices, and hacktivist strategies. Through my practice, I use techniques like video projection mapping, artificial intelligence, creative coding, biological art, robotics, multichannel sound, and augmented and virtual reality to investigate and experiment with the often invisible ways technology can shape humanity. I come from a working-class family, growing up in a mobile home in rural Michigan, the son of a laid-off auto worker and a 24-hour diner waitress. The activist themes of my work often seek to change the types of prejudices and exploitation I have seen while living in the industrial Midwest and in the former capital of the Confederacy. I bring a wide range of experiences to my work, including my time as a human anatomy lab technician, theatrical sound and lighting designer, alternative visual journalist, and descendant of Salem Witch Trial victims.

“For Katharina Kepler,” (2019), Artificial intelligence, multi-channel video projection mapping, 3D-modeled virtual environment, phosphorescent 3D bioplastic printed wearable sculpture VR viewer, phosphorescent duct tape, chain, your body, your body's shadow, dimensions variable
. Installation created with AI trained on microscopic human blood cells and telescopic images of distant stars, with a score created with AI trained on human heartbeats and radio waves from deep space. Includes an AI-designed 3D printed bioplastic vampire VR headset, and projection mapping to use human bodies as screens and include their shadows within the video. The video projection and VR experience were created based on the early 20th century films "The Birth of a Nation" and “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror,” which Millikin previously. combined in the single-channel film. “The Birth of a Vampire Nation.”

“Somnambulistic Autonomous Land-roving Enlightenment Machine,” (2020), Artificial intelligence, robotic rover and laser projection installation, dimensions variable
. The robotic rover uses artificial intelligence and machine vision to move about the space, its movements based on its readings of two types of court documents from human beings in the year 1692: Those from the Salem Witch Trials court proceedings, and those from English playwright Ben Jonson’s Third Folio of performances for the lords and ladies of English royal court. While this robot makes its way through the documents, it laser projects an animated looping video created by an AI trained on the handwriting of the texts themselves, as well as common themes — birds and clockwork — found by a poetic programmatic data analysis of these two types of court papers. The points in this installation where you are looking directly into the projector are the points that the robot is projecting on your body, effectively spotlighting you.
